Cyclope's House - Aci Castello

Tourist information

  • Acitrezza-Faraglioni

Aci Trezza is a hamlet of Aci Castello, in the province of Catania. Old fishing village, famous for its landscape dominated by the Cyclops Rocks: eight picturesque basaltic rocks which, according to local legend, were thrown by Polyphemus to Ulysses during his escape.
Acitrezza was, moreover, the country in which Giovanni Verga set the famous novel “I Malavoglia (1881)” and in which, in 1948, was filmed “La terra trema” by Luchino Visconti and Antonio Pietrangeli, masterpiece of the neo-realism, based on the Verga's novel, made with non-professional actors, local inhabitants.

  • Acireale-Carri infiorati

Acireale is a municipality of Catania. The most populous town of the province (after Catania), Acireale is famous for its Carnival, the Baroque and its Thermal baths.
The Carnival of Acireale, which attracts visitors from Sicily and Calabria, is one of the oldest on the island and called “the most beautiful Carnival in Sicily”, thank to the presence of the Allegorical-Grotesque wagons, wagons adorned with flowers and masked groups in the same parade.
Acireale is also a place of naturalistic interest: it was built on a terrace of lava, called “Timpa”, that places the town almost overhanging the Ionian Sea. The Timpa, since 1999, has become natural reserve. The particular structure, characterized by volcanic rocks in tiers and various faults, in which grows a dense vegetation, make the access impervious, therefore the territory of the reserve has well-preserved and in great measure absolutely uncontaminated.

  • Catania-Sicilia

Catania is the second most populous city in Sicily, after Palermo. It is located on the east coast, at the foot of the volcano Etna (Europe's tallest active volcano), between the cities of Messina and Syracuse.
Catania is one of the few places in Italy to have very different landscapes, on the inside of the same site. It has a long history characterized by several dominations, whose ruins enhance today the artistic, architectural and cultural heritage. There are few remains of the greek period, due to natural events and human factors. Instead, among the most significant examples of the Roman building in Catania, we find: the Roman Theatre, the Odeon, the Amphitheatre, the Indirizzo's thermal baths, the Rotonda's thermal baths, the Achilliane thermal baths, etc.
Throughout its history, Catania has been destroyed time after time by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, that have widely changed the city. But Catania's people, obstinately, have rebuilt it, on its own ruins, also thanks to many artists, nationally renown, among which stands out the work of the architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, which gave the city a clear Baroque style. The Baroque of the Historic Centre is recognized World Heritage by UNESCO.
Moreover, The Historic Centre has a lively nightlife, fun-filled, thanks to the nightspots, café-chantants, often crowded, especially in summer. An important cookery business, in Catania, is doubtless the kiosk of drinks, serving refreshing drinks, typical of the city's culture. The kiosks of drinks are unique.
